# Scroll Compressors - webcentive

Scroll compressors are the pump inside most modern home air conditioners and heat pumps, plus refrigeration, transport and oil-free air systems. For a home, the compressor comes inside the outdoor unit, so the real choice is an efficient, properly sized heat pump or AC put in by a licensed contractor. Under EPA's Technology Transitions rule, new home AC and heat pump systems are moving from R-410A to lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32, so replacement compressors and parts must match the system's refrigerant. Only EPA Section 608 certified technicians may buy and handle most refrigerants, and venting refrigerant is illegal. The federal 25C heat pump tax credit covered systems installed through Dec. 31, 2025; check ENERGY STAR and DSIRE for current state and utility rebates. Makers and brands below are commercial.
